The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a humanitarian organization which is over 150 years old. The ICRC works in situations of armed conflict and other situations of violence with the exclusive mandate of providing humanitarian assistance to the victims of such conflict. The ICRC is mandated by States through the Geneva Conventions and Statutes and this mandate is executed on an impartial, neutral and independent basis. The mandate is carried out throughout the world, including South Africa, at the ICRC Regional Delegation in Pretoria. Nelson Mandela University’s participation in the 30th Jean-Pictet Competition which took place in Ohrid, Macedonia in April 2018, strengthened the relationship between our university and the Pretoria Delegation which led to an internship opportunity being offered to one of our LLM students, Nikita Govender. Nikita will begin a three-month internship at the ICRC Pretoria Delegation in July 2018.
