Faculty of Law

Professor Avinash Govindjee is the Executive Dean at the Faulty of Law, Nelson Mandela University. He has been a Professor of Law since 2011 and has been serving the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration as a part-time Senior Commissioner for a period of 8 years. Govindjee is a consulting attorney to Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyer. He also has a long time association with the International Institute for Social Law and Policy (IISLP). He has been involved in a number of affairs abroad. Govindjee has also been one of three young South Africans nominated by the National Research Foundation (NRF) to attend the Science and Technology in Society Forum (Kyoto, Japan 2015). Govindjee, a member of the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS) and a NRF rated researcher (category C2, January 2014), has been a finalist in the Titans – Building Nations Awards (2014) for Leadership and Achievement in Education and has received an Emerging Old Rhodian Award from his alma mater, Rhodes University. In 2013 Govindjee had been included in the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chambers “40 under 40” list as well as the Mail and Guardian’s list of “200 Young South Africans”. Alongside Puke Maserumule and John Grogan, Govindjee also forms part of the Juta Annual Labour Law presentation team and has been invited to form part of the prestigious African Leadership Network.

Govindjee has received the Nelson Mandela University Faculty of Law Researcher of the Year award  for five (5) consecutive years and has obtained the Golden Key Lecturer of the Year (overall winner) award twice (2008 &2013). Govindjee has been a part of the South African Society for Labour Law (SASLAW) initiative to offer pro bono legal services at the premises of the Labour Court in Port Elizabeth. He’s been an honorary member of the Golden Key society, the honorary president of the Law Students society and an advisor to the Nelson Mandela University Black Lawyers Student Association.

Most recently, the Dean presented a paper at the Quest for Equity, Dr. B R Ambedkar International Conference, in India. Visit the Quest for Equity website for more information on the conference. He also attended the 30th Annual Labour Law Conference and was interviewed by the SABC regarding his take on the development of social grants in South Africa.
