Reasons to be Proud - #R2bP: Mandela University’s Research Associate in the Department of Public Law, Professor Sam Adelman, was awarded a prestigious British Academy/Leverhulme Senior Research Fellowship for 2019-2020.

The fellowship was awarded to examine the role of human rights in climate litigation and climate justice; to analyse the growing role of the rights of nature in promoting sustainable development and to propose ways in which these can be protected globally; and to analyse the role of human rights and the rights of nature in achieving climate justice for the poor and vulnerable groups in the global South.

Prof Adelman teaches and researches climate change, legal theory, and international development law and human rights in the School of Law at the University of Warwick. He holds the following degrees: Bachelor of Arts (University of the Witwatersrand), Master of Laws (Harvard University) and Doctor of Laws (Warwick University).

Prof Adelman was banned, detained and exiled during the struggle against apartheid. He is also currently co-authoring a book on climate justice with Upendra Baxi and editing a Research Handbook on Climate Justice and Human Rights.
